Breast cancer is increasingly spreading in Indian women these days. It is quite saddening to know that India is ranked 3rd in the world in cancer cases in females. Among those cases, breast cancer is the most commonly detected cancer in females. In India every 28th female is detected with breast cancer. Daily around 2000 females are detected with breast cancer in the country and 1200 from the same are detected at an advanced stage due to lack of awareness. Dr. Rupal Nirav Shah, Medical Director, Vama Wellness Center for Women talks about all the details you need to know about breast cancer.
Symptoms:
There are a few common symptoms of breast cancer which include change in the size or the shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breast or underarm. There are also cases where breast cancer has been detected without any such symptoms
Self examination and its importance:
Self examination is the most important step any woman can take to reduce chances of breast cancer. This is regular and systematic palpation of the breast by a woman herself to assess for any abnormality. It should be done during her period’s week for every woman of 20 years and above.
Mammography:
A mammogram is commonly used to detect early signs of breast cancer. It uses a low-energy X-ray to take an image of the human breast .Along with mammography, sonography is also done. Every woman ageing 40 and above should undergo mammography at least once a year. Ideal time to go through a mammogram is the week after your period ends.
“Many times we are only alert when we see a case of breast cancer in our families. We become cautious about our and our family members’ heath for some time and then again go careless about it. One should be active in self assessment of breast cancer and should immediately consult a doctor if anything suspicious is found for early detection. Only our awareness can prevent us and our dear ones from this disease.”
