Cancer cases are increasing rapidly in Indian women due to low awareness and late diagnosis. India accounts for the third highest number of cancer cases among women after China and the USA.

Cancer is an ailment that sees no age, caste, status or class. It can happen to anyone and everyone. Among women, there are many Indian known  faces that have gone through the painful journey- Nargis Dutt, Manisha Koirala, Lisa Ray, Mumtaz and Sonali Bendre to name a few.

So, What are the basics of Cancer?

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells anywhere in a body. Cancer is caused by genetic mutations in body cells, which can be inherited or can be caused due to forcing agents like smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), obesity, hormonal imbalance, chronic inflammation and a lack of exercise.

Cancer symptoms and signs

There are various symptoms depending on the specific type and grade of cancer. However, there are few  common symptoms and signs of cancer that are fatigue, weight loss, pain, skin changes, change in bowel or bladder function, unusual bleeding, persistent cough or voice change, fever, lumps, or tissue masses in the affected body parts.

Understanding common cancer and its causes

There are many types of cancers predominantly found in Women and some of them are quite common occurrences in India.

BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in India and accounts for 27% of all cancers in women. Monthly Self-examination of  breasts is the best way. You can feel the breast for lumps or other abnormalities. Mammography at regular intervals after the age of 40 can help in the early detection .Women with a family history of breast cancer should discuss earlier screening with their doctor

CERVICAL CANCER

The cervical cancer is caused by several strains of a virus called human papilloma viruses (HPV). You’re at higher risk of cervical cancer if you smoke, have many children, have many sex partners or have HIV infection. The simple cervical cancer screening test commonly known as PAP test can timely find precancerous changes in the cervix that can be treated before they become an advanced stage of cancer. Cervical cancer screening should be started  at a regular interval, ideally after 21 years or as soon as the sexual exposure gets started. The HPV vaccine significantly reduces the risk of cervical cancer. It’s recommended for girls aged 11-12, and for women up to 26 who haven’t been vaccinated.

OVARIAN CANCER

When abnormal cells in the ovaries start to grow out of control and form tumors, ovarian cancer results. Although the precise cause is unknown, inherited gene mutations (such as BRCA1 or BRCA2), age, hormonal changes, and relatives with a history of ovarian or breast cancer can all raise the risk, with the risk rising after menopause

The chances of ovarian cancer increase from 35 years of age and reach a peak between 55-64 years. A pelvic exam and ultrasonography should be part of a woman’s regular health exam after 40 years to detect these cancers at the earliest.

In conclusion, if you, a pretty lady, find any type of abnormalities in your body or you happen to observe any of the above symptoms, don’t be late to address it and consult your gynaecologist at the earliest.  Regular health check-ups, screenings, and early intervention are essential for women to protect themselves against these common cancers. Take control of your health today.

Cancers can be prevented, by early screening and detection and treatment at an early stage, which, not only reduce the death rate of these cancers but also improve the quality of life post-cancer treatment.
